What makes New Zealand's natural heritage so special?

Underlying New Zealand's physical attractions--its dramatic mountains, unpolluted beaches and green countryside--is an epic survival story of unique plants and animals.
Cast adrift from the ancient supercontinent of Gondwanaland, these ancient species evolved in isolation and struggled to survive in what renowned naturalist David Bellamy has called 'Moa's Ark' (named after New Zealand's native, but now extinct, giant flightless bird, the moa).
After only 1000 years of human settlement New Zealand has lost many native species. But impressive gains have been made in recent times to protect and enhance what is left. These include removing introduced pests from island wildlife sanctuaries, the establishment of 13 national parks, three maritime parks, two world heritage areas, hundreds of nature reserves and ecological areas, a network of marine reserves and wetlands, and protection for special rivers and lakes.

In total, around 30 percent of New Zealand's land area is protected conservation land.

In addition, research and management programmes have been introduced to aid the recovery of rare and endangered species like kakapo, kokako, kiwi and tuatara.

New Zealand welcomes everyone to experience and discover its unique and precious natural heritage. We ask only that you make as little impact as possible, so future generations may also enjoy it as you do..

Top 10 Benefits of Physiotherapy
Physiotherapists manage and prevent many physical problems caused by illness, disease, sport and work related injury, aging, and long periods of inactivity.
Physiotherapy is a health care profession which assists people to restore, maintain and maximize their strength, function, movement, and overall well-being. The terms “physiotherapy” and “physical therapy” mean the same thing and are used interchangeably, as are the terms “physiotherapist” and “physical therapist”.
Physiotherapists have in-depth knowledge of how the body works and specialized hands-on clinical skills to assess, diagnose, and treat symptoms of illness, injury and disability. Physiotherapists often work in teams with other health professionals to help meet an individual’s health care needs.

Here are 10 benefits of using physiotherapy to manage and prevent physical problems.

1.) Eliminated or minimize your pain
- no more time wasted worrying about that nagging pain. Our goal is to get you free of pain and feeling healthy again.

2.) Muscle flexibility restored
- so you can feel suppler and have ease of movement throughout your daily activities. Why? In your daily activities you will need full range of motion for your function; therefore you need full flexibility of the muscles. (eg. shoulder check when driving.)

3.) Muscle strength restored
- so you can take on all your activities on the weekend and not feel like you cannot do them or are at risk of injury. ( ie. playing freely with your kids and keeping up to them.)

4.) Joint range of motion restored
- this is important because if you have a
a. Neck injury – when driving you will need to do a shoulder check to check your blind spot to avoid a vehicle collision.
b. Lower back injury – being able to move to bend over and twist to do your daily activities and sports.
c. Shoulder injury – being able to reach to grab objects above your head and behind you.

5.) Increased function at work and play
- You will need to use your body to do everyday activities at home and at work. For example lifting your little children into the car seat. Snow shoveling in the winter, raking the lawn in the summer.

6.) Increased endurance at work and play
- More ENERGY for longer more productive days!

7.) Peace of mind
- not having to worry about that nagging pain that was limiting your function.

8.) Being able to sleep uninterrupted and free of pain at night
- Awaking feeling recharged and ready to take on the challenges ahead for that day!

9.) Discontinue or reduce your medication consumption
therefore less risk and potential side effects associated with prolonged use of medication.

10.) Return to playing your favorite sport
and hobbies that you have enjoyed that provide you with a higher quality of life.

All of these 10 benefits are what our staff at Nose Creek Sport Physical Therapy focus on to restore your overall function to get you moving faster and feeling better. We will provide you with a customized recovery program that will restore you to your maximal potential, and get you moving faster

Achilles Tendonitis Prevention

Learn the causes behind Achilles Tendonitis, plus crucial prevention strategies.

Part 1
Every week I get asked for information on Achilles Tendonitis. So instead of constantly referring people to other sites, I thought it was time to write an article on Achilles Tendonitis myself.

Achilles injuries are commonly associated with sports that require a lot of running, jumping and change of direction. Excessive twisting or turning of the ankle and foot can result in inflammation, strain or a rupture. Sports with the highest occurrence of Achilles injury include running, walking, cycling, football, basketball and tennis.

If you suffer from achilles tendonitis or are seeking to prevent its occurrence it is important to follow the information in this article. In addition, adding a few simple stretches to your fitness program will also help. To get started on a safe and effective stretching routine.

What is an Achilles tendon Injury?
Firstly, let's take a look at where the Achilles tendon is located and what it does.

The Achilles tendon is located at the rear (posterior) of the bottom half of the lower leg. Its a thick band of connective fiber that runs from bottom of the Gastrocnemius muscle to the heel bone.

The Achilles tendon is used to plantar flex the foot, or point the foot downward. This allows a person the run, jump and stand on one's toes.

The Achilles tendon is the strongest tendon of the body, and able to withstand a 1000 pound force without tearing. Despite this, the Achilles ruptures more frequently than any other tendon because of the tremendous pressures placed on it during competitive sports.

There are two main types of injuries that affect the Achilles tendon; Achillis Tendonitis and Achilles Tendon Rupture.

Achilles Tendonitis is simply an inflammation of the tendon, and in most cases is caused by excessive training over an extended period of time.

Achilles Tendon Rupture, on the other hand, is a tear (or complete snapping) of the tendon, and usually occurs as the result of a sudden or unexpected force. In the case of a complete rupture, the only treatment available is to place the lower leg in a plaster cast for 6 to 8 weeks, or surgery. As both of these treatments are beyond the scope of this article, we'll be focusing the rest of this article on Achilles Tendonitis.

Causes and Risk Factors
There are a number of causes and risk factors associated with Achilles Tendonitis. One of the most common causes is simply a lack of conditioning. If the tendon, and muscles that connect to the tendon, have not been trained or conditioned, this can lead to a weakness that may result in an Achilles injury.

Overtraining is also associated with Achilles Tendonitis. Doing too much, too soon places excessive strain on the Achilles tendon and doesn't allow the tendon enough time to recovery properly. Over time small tears and general degeneration result in a weakening of the tendon, which leads to inflammation and pain.

Other causes of Achilles injury include a lack of warming up and stretching. Wearing inadequate footwear, running or training on uneven ground, and simply standing on, or in something you're not meant to. Biomechanical problems such as high arched feet or flat feet can also lead to Achilles injuries.

So what are some of the things you can do to help prevent Achilles Tendonitis?

Warm Up properly
A good warm up is essential in getting the body ready for any activity. A well structured warm up will prepare your heart, lungs, muscles, joints and your mind for strenuous activity.
Plyometric Training
Plyometric drills include jumping, skipping, bounding, and hopping type activities. These explosive types of exercises help to condition and prepare the muscles, tendons and ligaments in the lower leg and ankle joint.
Balancing Exercises
Any activity that challenges your ability to balance, and keep your balance, will help what's called proprioception: - your body's ability to know where it's limbs are at any given time.
Stretch and Strengthen
I'll cover these in a lot more detail a little later on when I discuss rehabilitation and conditioning exercises.
Footwear
Be aware of the importance of good footwear. A good pair of shoes will help to keep your ankles stable, provide adequate cushioning, and support your foot and lower leg during the running or walking motion.
In part 2, I'll be outlining a comprehensive initial and ongoing treatment program to make recovery from Achilles Tendonitis as quick as possible.

THIS year’s edition of the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) is dominated by Harare companies who make up 57% of local exhibitors, with Bulawayo firms accounting for 35%.

Report by Nqobile Bhebhe

More than 100 firms have closed in Bulawayo in the last few years citing viability constrains and the poor presence of city firms at the country’s premier trade showcase dash hopes of any imminent recovery prospects.

ZITF company chairman Bekithemba Nkomo told journalists that although participation at the fair was not different from last year, they were impressed by the quality of products being showcased.
But he bemoaned the poor turnout by city firms, which he described as worrying.

“The local exhibitor profile is made up of mostly companies from Harare (57%), while 35% of companies are from Bulawayo. Other cities account for 8%,” Nkomo said.

According to the official ZITF catalogue, notable Bulawayo-based companies at the fair include Datlabs, Treger Products, Zimplow , Turnal and Zimtile.

Over the years, companies in Bulawayo have been closing shop, while others relocated to Harare citing viability problems.

In 2011, the government set up the Distressed Industries and Marginalised Fund to address de-industrialisation, but only a few Bulawayo companies have managed to tap into the $40 million purse.

Nkomo also said participation by the manufacturing sector was still low.

“Overall, manufacturing companies make up 14% of total exhibitors, a testimony to the fact that manufacturing levels in the country, though picking up slowly, are still relatively low,” he said.

Meanwhile, South African exhibitors yesterday claimed that some of their exhibits were still stuck at Beitbrige border post.

Responding to inquiries from journalists on concerns raised by South Africans, outgoing ZITF general manager Denial Chigaru said they were not “100% sure” as to the cause of the delay.

“We are not 100% sure as to the cause of the delay,” he said.

“Our understanding is that cargo goods are flown and cleared in Harare as (the Joshua Mqabuko International Airport) does not clear cargo.

“We have what we call quick service at the border where goods are allowed to enter in bonds to be cleared here at the trade fair.

“However, we advised exhibitors to use clearing agents as that is much faster, but some are not doing so.”

Malawian President Joyce Banda will officially open the 54th edition of the ZITF this afternoon.

"Fatal error C0000034"

Solution
-----------

It essentially involves doing a manual system restore.
- Open the recovery console
- Change working directory to whatever the root folder of the Windows install is (might be D: or some other letter for some people):

cd /d C:\windows\system32\config
Rename the following files by typing the following:

ren default default.old
ren sam sam.old
ren security security.old
ren software software.old
ren system system.old

- Change the working directory:

cd regback

- Copy the files from this directory to the previous directory as follows:

copy default c:\windows\system32\config
copy sam c:\windows\system32\config
copy security c:\windows\system32\config
copy software c:\windows\system32\config
copy system c:\windows\system32\config

- Having done this, I restarted my computer, and it booted all the way with no errors. However, it seemed somewhat unstable, so I booted into Safe Mode and ran CHKDSK (chkdsk /B) and conducted a normal system restore to before the service pack install using the normal method. To fix remaining problems, I ran sfc /scannow. My computer now seems to be running as well as ever.

Sales of New Homes in U.S. Climb 1.5% to 417,000 Rate
By Alex Kowalski - Apr 23, 2013 2:04 PM MT

March U.S. New-Home Sales Climb 1.5% to 417K Rate
Sales of new U.S. homes advanced in March as near record-low mortgage rates helped the industry complete the strongest quarter since 2008, putting the economy on firmer footing.

Purchases of single-family properties climbed 1.5 percent last month to a 417,000 annual pace, Commerce Department figures showed today in Washington. The median estimate of 76 economists surveyed by Bloomberg called for March sales to rise to 416,000.
Shares of homebuilders such as Toll Brothers Inc. (TOL) rallied as cheaper borrowing costs and rising household formation bolstered demand. The figures underscore the view of some Federal Reserve policy makers that residential real estate will contribute more to economic growth this year.
“There is momentum in the housing market, in that inventories are lean, prices are picking up, and people are trying to buy, which is fueling the recovery,” said Daniel Silver, an economist at JPMorgan Chase & Co. and the second-best forecaster of new-home sales in the past two years, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. “You’re seeing spillover in the housing market from broader economic improvement.”

Home sales averaged a 424,000 annual rate in the first three months of this year, the strongest since the third quarter of 2008.
Stocks climbed, sending the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index higher for a third day, as earnings from Travelers Cos. to Netflix Inc. beat estimates. The S&P 500 rose 1 percent to 1,578.78 at the close in New York. The S&P 500 Supercomposite Homebuilding Index (S15HOME) jumped 5.6 percent, the biggest gain since July 26.
Barclays Optimistic
Barclays Plc analysts raised their view on the industry today to positive from neutral, projecting a 10 percent jump in new-home prices this year amid a “fast and furious” recovery. The median price of a new home climbed 3 percent last month from a year earlier to $247,000, today’s report showed.
Today’s housing figures showing strength in the U.S. economy contrast with weakness elsewhere. Euro-area services and factory output shrank for a 15th month in April as the currency bloc struggled to emerge from a recession, adding to pressure on the European Central Bank to do more to boost growth.
China’s manufacturing is expanding at a slower pace this month on weakness in global and domestic demand, according to a Purchasing Managers’ Index released by HSBC Holdings and Markit Economics, fueling concern that the world’s second-biggest economy is faltering.
Economists’ estimates for U.S. March new-home sales ranged from rates of 395,000 to 435,000. February was previously reported at a 411,000 annual rate.
By Region
Purchases were 17.6 percent higher in March than the same period in 2012, today’s report showed.
Sales increased in two of four regions from the prior month, with a 20.6 percent gain in the Northeast and a 19.4 percent advance in the South. Demand decreased 20.9 percent in the West and 12.1 percent in the Midwest.

Builders are responding to increased demand by making more homes available. There were 153,000 new houses on the market at the end of March, the most since November 2011. At the current sales rate, the supply would last 4.4 months, the same as in February.
“We’re in recovery, it’s early, but it certainly feels like it’s real and it feels like it will be sustained,” Douglas Yearley, chief executive officer of Horsham, Pennsylvania-based Toll Brothers, the largest U.S. luxury-home builder, said during a March 4 conference presentation. “We had a few false starts over the last few years, but we had a really good spring 2012 selling season. And now we’re having an even better spring 2013 selling season.”
Home Construction
Housing starts climbed to a 1.04 million annual rate, the fastest since June 2008, the Commerce Department said last week.
At the same time, higher costs for raw materials, limited developed land and tight credit conditions are hurdles. The National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo index of builder confidence fell this month to its lowest level since October, data showed April 15.
Builders were still more optimistic about the future, with a gauge of their sales outlook for the next six months increasing to the highest level since 2007.
Mortgage rates hovering near record lows and a healing job market may keep providing a spark for the industry. The average rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage fell to 3.41 percent in the week ended April 18, the third consecutive drop, according to Freddie Mac. The rate slid to an all-time low of 3.31 percent in November.
Fed’s Dudley
“After a long period of being a drag on the economy, the housing market is now providing lift to economic activity,” Federal Reserve Bank of New York President William C. Dudley said in an April 16 speech in Staten Island. “In 2013 it is likely to provide a boost to growth on the order of 0.5 percentage point.”
Figures yesterday from the National Association of Realtors showed previously owned homes sold at a 4.92 million rate in March, down from a 4.95 million pace the previous month.
A lack of inventory of more affordable existing properties has driven up the cost of such homes, making newly-constructed units more attractive to potential buyers. The NAR report showed the median price of an existing home rose 11.8 percent, the most since November 2005, to $184,300 last month from a year earlier.
Sales of new homes are calculated when a contract is signed, making them a timelier barometer than purchases of previously owned dwellings, which are tabulated when a deal closes. Newly constructed houses accounted for about 7 percent of the residential market in 2012, down more than 15 percent before the 2007-2009 recession began.
The strength in housing is spreading to other parts of the economy.
“The majority of the data still points to a robust and sustainable recovery,” Christopher Connor, chief executive officer of Sherwin-Williams Co. (SHW), said during an April 18 earnings call. “Our sales results in the first quarter support that conclusion.”
Sales at the Cleveland-based company, the largest U.S. paint retailer, rose 1.4 percent in the first quarter from a year earlier to reach a record $2.17 billion.

Dear All
It is with regret that I have had to make a very hard decision to cancel C in the House, Colzium House, June 15th. 2013
Following my period in hospital and major spinal operation my recovery has not gone plan. Anticipating a further spell in hospital I have decided in fairness to all concerned to cancel the event. The situation has been further compounded by a house move with no Internet access for 4 weeks so I apologies for what may appear to be short notice.
I do intend to reschedule the event when my health improves but this will not be in Kilsyth, rather more near Lockerbie and trust for kind offers of assistance again.
I thank you for your offering your skills, talents, and support.
With sincerest best wishes
John Montgomery.

I'm in for a mixed weekend. Treat tonight with Annabelle. Funeral tomorrow morning. Girlie night out tomorrow night and Sunday a day of recovery. Roll on 4pm

Random thought.... Would it be weird to give a homeless person new underwear and socks? If I was homeless I would want new panties and fresh socks as well as food or spare change... Right? Or would that be odd lol?

So I found out yesterday that my friends sons were in a very bad.car accident please keep Gracie Avila s sons in your prayers for a full recovery and for their pain to ease. God bless this.family and thank god they r still here with us. Prayers for them.during this difficult time. I believe it was Anthony and Zack that were thrown from the truck. Again just pray for them and their family.

April 26 Self-Acceptance

"The most effective means of achieving self-acceptance is through applying the Twelve Steps of recovery."

IP No. 19, "Self-Acceptance"

Most of us came to Narcotics Anonymous without much self-acceptance. We looked at the havoc we had wreaked in our active addiction, and we loathed ourselves. We had difficulty accepting our past and the self-image produced by it.

Self-acceptance comes more quickly when we first accept that we have a disease called addiction, because it's easier to accept ourselves as sick people than as bad people. And the easier it is to accept ourselves, the easier it becomes to accept responsibility for ourselves.

We achieve self-acceptance through the process of ongoing recovery. Working the Twelve Steps of Narcotics Anonymous teaches us to accept ourselves and our lives. Spiritual principles like surrender, honesty, faith, and humility help relieve us of the burden of our past mistakes. Our attitude changes with the application of these principles in our daily lives. Self-acceptance grows as we grow in recovery.

Just for today: Self-acceptance is a process set in motion by the Twelve Steps. Today, I will trust the process, practice the steps, and learn to better accept myself.

A little update on Megan Stansell Ferber. I tried to do this last night but I started it too late. I could not keep my eyes open and kept making stupid mistakes. So here we go. Meg is doing real well. Lots of physical therapy, occupational therapy and something called recreational therapy. The pain meds are finally regulated correctly. She can be kept comfortable and able to do her therapy.
The rehab hospital is a wonderful place to recover. They have allowed me and Kevin to stay with Meg 24 hrs. a day. She gets the best care that way. The staff, all so kind and concerned, can do their job and we can do all the little things that help make Megan's recovery go smoothly.
The food at the hospital leaves a lot to be desired. Each day when Megan marks her request for what she will eat tomorrow she says "what do I wan't to throw away tomorrow. Really sad to see how much food is wasted? She is eating well only because Kevin usually brings in lunch and dinner.
Each day I have been able to go to the motorhome, that is parked in the Ronald McDonald House parking lot, to rest and get a shower. We are so blessed to have the ability to stay so close to the hospital.
We sure do appreciate all the thoughts and prayers. We know there has been lots of miracles and we thank God for each one.
Today we found out that the insurance won't pay for the special potty chair or the shower bench that the Drs want her to have. Because the insurance company uses Medicare approved medical equipment guide lines these items are not approved. A shower is not a necessity it is a luxury. Here is the kicker!!! If she had medi-cal both would be paid for. So much for us hard WORKING suckers.
Lucky for us my cousin is married to a wonderful guy that owns a medical equipment company. Kevin's Ins. is not contracted with him, but he will help them get what is needed at a reasonable price. Again God has provided!!
Signing off for now. Remember WEAR YOUR SEATBELT.
